Q & A session with Snipes Farm's newest farmer, Nicholas Cole
March 26, 2018
Introducing our newest CSA farmer, Nicolas Cole!
Q: What do you want our CSA members to know about Snipes Farm?
A: Locally grown, locally sourced food is really important to healthy communities and in bringing people together.
Q: What is your educational background?
A: I have a B.A. degree in African American Music Studies (Jazz) from the University of Hartford, Hartt School of Music. I like a very free form of music.
Q: What is your job like?
A: Right now doing a lot of seeding, a lot of prep, transplanting, and harvesting the last of the winter crops (lettuce, arugula, spinach, mustard greens).
Q: What kind of problems do you deal with?
A: Mice are a big one; they like to dig up seeds. And keeping up with the organic certification regulations.
Q: What part of farming do you personally find most satisfying?
A: Planting, transplanting, watching crops grow and people taking the harvest home.
Q: What sorts of changes are occurring in farming?
A: Having lived in New England where just about everyone is a farmer, I have seen how community can find the benefit in locally sourced organic food and sustainable agriculture, whereas industrial farming may use up the land and move on.
Q: What are the skills that are most important for a position in farming?
A: Intense attention to detail and a really strong work ethic.
Q: What is your favorite vegetable?
A: I love cauliflower, but ARUGULA
changed my perspective. A buddy put it on a sandwich for me and it blew my mind! After that I started growing it for myself.
Q: You are a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
A: Green is my favorite color. I am always reminded of that every winter when I walk into a greenhouse after staring at a white and gray landscape for so long.
Q: What do you want to learn?
A: I want to learn more about the chemistry of plants.
Q: What's the last thing you watched on TV?
A: Star Trek Next Generation. I grew up on this.
Q: What do you work on in your free time?
A: I play guitar and mandolin, and play with my dog, Ginny, a lab and pit bull mix. She's a handful.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: A farmer or a musician.
