The three films being screened that day include “The Cure” (1917), “The Adventurer” (1917), and “The Pawnshop” (1916). Prior to the mid-1920s, all movies were silent, and dialogue was transmitted through mute gestures, mime and title cards, which contained a written indication of the plot or key dialogue. For added effect, silent films were commonly accompanied by musicians who provided a live score in the movie house. The Newtown Theatre, which showed its first film in 1906, was one of these places.
