Bucks Beautiful Launches New Reforestation Initiative

Bucks Beautiful is taking on a new initiative called Replant Bucks, with the goal of planting 10,000 trees in Bucks County to replace the ash trees that have been killed by the emerald ash borer. There is a real sense of urgency with Replant Bucks since the bare root “whips,” which are two to three-year-old trees without branches, must be planted before April 15 while they are still dormant. And since much needs to be done before that urgent deadline, funds need to be raised NOW to purchase the saplings.

The reforestation will consist of oaks, tulips, poplars, evergreens, sugar maples, shagbark hickories, chestnuts and red maples and will be planted in groves in ten Bucks County Parks by local nurseries participating in the initiative.

In 2014 the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reported that ash
forests in Pennsylvania had been reduced by 12%. Andrew Liebhold, a research entomologist with
the United States Forest Service said, “Ninety-nine percent of the ashes in North America are
probably going to die.” And, it can take as little as two years for the ash borer to kill a tree.

Replant Bucks is the fourth program started by Bucks Beautiful, a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization. Their other programs include Bulbs for Bucks, Kitchen and Garden Tour, Spring
Fling, and Community, which encompasses community garden grants, educational seminars and
horticultural scholarships. Please help us with this important mission to keep Bucks County beautiful through the Replant Bucks program. Contributions can be made at or by sending a check to Bucks Beautiful, 85 E. State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
