The Whiskey Rebellion: A Distilled History of an American Crisis
Sunday October 6, 2024
In March 1791 Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton shocked the western frontier when he proposed a tax on whiskey to balance America's national debt. The law, known as the "Whiskey Act," disproportionately penalized farmers in the backcountry, while offering favorable tax incentives designed to protect larger distillers. Settlers in Western Pennsylvania bristled at its passage and demanded that the law be revoked or rewritten to correct its perceived injustices. As the months passed people grew restless with the inadequacy of the government's response and they soon turned to more violent means of political expression. In response President George Washington raised one of the largest forces he ever commanded to suppress the rebellion. No major battle ever occurred, but weeks of arrests, illegal detentions, and civil rights violations rocked the west. The event polarized the nation. This free event is held in a hybrid format. Visitors may attend in-person in the Visitor Center Auditorium at 1112 River Rd, Washington Crossing, PA 18977 or virtually on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. In the event of inclement weather, this will be a virtual-only event and registrants will be notified. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance.

14th Annual Faces and Places, Friends of the Delaware Canal
Sunday October 6, 2024
The Friends of the Delaware Canal will host its 14th Annual Faces and Places – A Celebration of the Arts and History along the Delaware Canal on Sunday, October 6th. This year’s event will take place in and around Washington Crossing and Delaware Canal State Park. We will begin our event at the park's northern end. The Friends of Washington Crossing Park will lead our tour of The Thompson-Neely Farmstead. The Thompson-Neely House has been recently renovated and restored. We will also learn about one of the six remaining camelback bridges that span the canal. Next, we travel to the park's southern end, where our guides will take us on a tour of the Hibbs House, the Blacksmith's Shop, and the Durham Boat Barn and highlight several historic buildings in an area once called Taylorsville. The Delaware Canal sprang out of the industrial revolution and runs through both the lower and upper parks. Our event offers a unique opportunity to delve into the canal's rich history and its significant role in the area's growth. The finale will be dinner at the Washington Crossing Inn. Known for its food and excellent service, the Inn will undoubtedly top off our event with style and leave you with a memorable experience.
