Historic Newtown Theatre Announces 2024 Holiday Classic Film Series - Screening classic holiday movies is a tradition dating back decades at the historic Newtown Theatre.
This year’s lineup includes something for all ages, including all-time classics such as “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas” and family favorites like “Home Alone” and “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” The lineup even includes “Die Hard!” “You can watch many of these movies at home, of course, but nothing gets you in the holiday spirit like sharing the experience with a theatre full of people who are laughing, smiling, clapping, singing and sometimes crying along with you,” says Andrew Smith, executive director of the Newtown Theatre. Unless indicated otherwise, tickets for the holiday classics are $5 for everyone and are available at TheNewtownTheatre.com or the theatre box office starting 30 minutes prior to each movie (if not sold out).

Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tours December/January
The Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour begins and ends at Washington Crossing, PA. Guests spend the day retracing the December 25 crossing of the Delaware and the December 26, 1776 through January 3, 1777 American and British military engagements at Trenton, Princeton and areas in-between. Historical interpreters Roger Williams and Larry Kidder will tell the remarkable story of these ten days that breathed crucial new life into the apparently expiring American Revolution. The next public bus tours will be offered on December 7th and December 27th, 2024 and January 4th and January 17th 2025. Tours last from 9 AM to 4 PM.

12/7 - Holiday Chili Luncheon, Newtown Presbyterian Church, 11:30-2:30pm., Join us for chili (meat or vegetarian), cornbread, salad, dessert and beverage. The Chili Luncheon is an important fundraiser. This year ticket sale proceeds will be used for the ongoing environmental needs of the Chancellor Street Church Building. Please note that for safety precautions all food offered for in-house dining will be individually packaged, and disposable containers will be utilized. Additionally, there will be cookies and handmade items available for sale. All purchases require either CASH or CHECK. 12/7 - Holiday Open House, Yardley Historical Association, 1-4pm. Come see the Old Library by Lake Afton decked out in its holiday best on December 7, 14 and 21. The festivities will be located in the heart of Yardley at 46 West Afton Avenue. The highlight will be an expansive model train layout with tooting engines, clattering cabooses, and trolleys. With familiar buildings, landmarks, and billboards, the railroad scene will evoke Yardley’s past and present. “Yardley” gifts – “Yardley’s Dream” scented candles, “The Key to Yardley” ornaments, flour sack tea towels, book diaries, books, prints, and paper goods of all sorts – will be available to purchase for holiday gift giving or keeping. In the spirit of the season, the Open Houses are free. Donations are always welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Historical Association’s efforts to maintain the Victorian library building and its collections of books, documents, and ephemera related to Yardley’s history.

12/8 – Anastasia Scavenger Hunt, Bucks County Playhouse, 2pm., The hunt is on! Bring your friends and search for clues! Bucks County Playhouse (through Watson Adventures) is hosting a special Anastasia scavenger hunt. Learn more about the history behind the Playhouse's new production of "Anastasia: The Musical" while discovering the hidden treasures of the town of New Hope. Guided by an app on your phone, you will uncover the mysteries, answer questions, and earn points for valuable prizes. 12/11 - Delaware River Greenway Partnership Heritage Lecture, 7:30pm., Join us, via Zoom, for a Delaware River Greenway Partnership Heritage Lecture on the history of the Tocks Island dam controversy and the project that led to the creation of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware River is the longest undammed river east of the Mississippi. This was almost not the case as a massive dam, planned for just north of the Water Gap, was authorized by Congress in 1962. As a result, thousands of residents of the area lost their homes and other properties to government acquisition. David Pierce will share the fascinating story of the fight to defeat the Tocks Island dam during the dawn of the modern environmental movement. Starting with one local citizen, a grassroots coalition brought attention to, and ultimately, stopped the dam and changed the course of local history.

Arrival by 11:30 AM is recommended to secure a good view. Admission is free, thanks to proceeds from the December 8th Crossing and contributions from many generous donors. Both River Crossings are contingent upon safe weather conditions for participants. However, even if conditions do not allow for crossing, guests can still participate in historic ceremonies, speeches, and commemorative colonial-era activities.
