New Yardley-Based Non Profit to begin Food Collections

A new nonprofit, Second Helping, will recycle and redistribute unused, un-purchased food in Bucks County and surrounding areas. Because of strict guidelines, stores and restaurants discard food even though it is nutritious and completely safe to eat. In America, 40% of food goes to landfills while 1 in 6 Americans goes hungry. In Bucks County, 1 in 10 residents and 15% of all children are considered food insecure. Second Helping will collect food from restaurants, caterers, cafeterias, and grocery and farm stores. These business throw out food because it is less costly than storing, handling, and shipping it for donation. Second Helping will reduce this waste by handling and delivering food to area pantries. To help Bucks County go green and fight hunger, Second Helping requests donations of food, time, and funds.
Food donors are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. Second Helping is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all contributions are tax deductible. Food donors are eligible for tax benefits. For more information please contact Cindy Kunnas at 267-797-6425 or Cindy@SecondHelpingPA.org.
