Join the Friends of the Delaware Canal on Friday, December 27 to “Hike Out the 20-Teens.”  This invigorating 4--mile, round-trip walk between Centre Bridge and Lumberville will begin at 10 a.m. at the Virginia Forrest Recreation Area, 3211 River Road in New Hope.

Led by Susan Taylor, Executive Director of the Friends, walkers will follow the towpath north while taking in Delaware River vistas.  Stories from the past will be shared along the way.  Both the Lenape and Pennsylvania Impressionist Edward Redfield once inhabited Hendrick Island.  Two hundred men worked at the Delaware Quarry site in its heyday, and its stone was hauled on canal boats to Philadelphia where it was used to construct the Reading Terminal.  Just to the north lies the Cuttalossa Creek valley, scenic today, but alive with industry and colorful characters in the 19th century.

The village of Lumberville will be the northern destination, where walkers may choose to have lunch on their own at either the Black Bass Hotel or the Lumberville General Store.  A third option is to burn more calories by walking directly back to the Virginia Forrest Recreation Area.   Whether done before or after having lunch, the return walk is an easy one.

“Hike Out the 20-Teens” will be held unless it is raining, snowing, or conditions are hazardous.  If in doubt, check for a GO/NO GO message on the home page of
