Winter Sowing Workshop, Free
Sunday January 22, 2023
The public is invited to attend a free Winter Sowing Workshop from 1-2:30 pm on Sunday, January 22nd at the Hopewell Train Station. Participants will learn how to build a mini greenhouse using a repurposed milk jug. This easy winter sowing method is inexpensive - and ideal for many native plants or early-season garden vegetables! The workshop will be led by sisters, Carole Fay and Laurie Cleveland. Ms. Fay is a retired agriculture teacher and Master Gardener; Ms. Cleveland is the Executive Director of the Sourland Conservancy and a PA Master Naturalist. "Providing food and shelter for native wildlife is very rewarding," said Ms. Fay. "This winter sowing method is a fantastic way for beginners to learn the basics and grow lots of pretty native plants with minimal time or money." Participants will gain knowledge about cold stratification, the habitat requirements of several native plants, and some of the wildlife that the plants support. Each participant will receive all of the supplies needed to winter sow at home: a repurposed milk jug, a twist tie, native seeds, and soil.

Choral Masses by Franz Joseph Haydn
Sunday January 22, 2023
The Central Jersey Choral Society welcomes the Year 2023 with two outstanding masses by Franz Joseph Haydn
on Sunday, January 22 at 4:30 pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church 137 W. Upper Ferry Rd., Ewing NJ 08628.
Tickets are $20 online at CJCSChoralSociety.org or $25 at the door.
CJCS Artistic Director Christopher Loeffler points out that "Every generation confronts its own challenges. When Haydn was composing his 'Mass in Time of War' and 'Mass in Troubled Times' (also called the 'Lord Nelson Mass'), his home country, Austria, was at war with Napoleon Bonaparte... and it wasn't going well. Both pieces occasionally feel martial and aggressive to express a Vienna that was pulsing with tension and war-induced anxiety. The 'Mass in Time of War' is also called the 'Timpani Mass' because of Haydn's heavy use of the dramatic kettle drums, which helps build this tension. However, both works heroically evoke a spirit of hope through hardship. We believe these masses successfully lift the listener from the overwhelming cares of reality to a transcendent plane of noble perseverance in the face of adversity. Please join us in our exploration of these masterworks of Joseph Haydn and give him the opportunity to lift your spirits."
