Saturday August 18, 2018
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Paddle the waters of the Delaware Canal -two 2-mile boat trip will be offered.  The first will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and the second from 1 to 3 p.m. Each will start at the Theodore Roosevelt Recreation Area (aka Groundhog Lock), 300 Canal Road, Easton, PA 18042.    These gentle paddling trips are hosted by the Friends of the Delaware Canal and Delaware Canal State Park.

Kayakers and canoeists will discover the Delaware Canal from a new, in-water vantage point.  State Park Educator Katie Martens will lead the paddle, which will head north from Locks 22 and 23.  The scenery is lovely and there are great tales to tell from the lost town of Uhlersville to the remains of the hydroelectric plant that powered the Easton-to-Doylestown trolley line.

Paddlers may bring their own kayaks or canoes and personal floatation devices, or they may borrow the equipped kayaks that the State Park will have available.  There will be 16 seats available on 12 single kayaks and 2 tandem kayaks.  They will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.  Registration for this activity is required no later than August 6 by contacting the Friends at 215-862-2021 or friends@fodc.org.  A $10 donation is requested if participants use State Park kayaks.  For more information about this and other events, visit http://www.fodc.org

Saturday August 18, 2018
3:00 PM

Join the Friends of the Delaware Canal on Saturday, August 18 for a “Multi-Faceted Afternoon in Historic Bristol Borough.”  This event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library, 680 Radcliffe Street, Bristol, PA 19007.

The afternoon’s activities will start in the Library with a showing of “Paradise Ditch,” a short 1950’s era film about the Delaware Canal and surrounding area.  It is a real period piece including shots of mule-drawn boats, locktenders, and skinny-dipping whippersnappers taken during the preceding 25 years.

Also on view will be an exceptional exhibit, “Made in America:  The Grundy Mill and the Business of Spinning Wool.”  It features the iconic woolen mill owned by Bristol Borough’s foremost citizen and philanthropist, Joseph R. Grundy.  The daily lives of mill workers and the wool manufacturing process are featured with compelling photographs and maps.

Outside, guests will take in the Library’s lovely rooftop patio garden and walk along the Delaware River using the new Riverside Park pathway.  Afterwards, participants are invited to do the Bristol Stroll on their own, viewing exceptional colonial and Victorian buildings along Radcliffe Street, the famous Wharf, the busy new pier and dock, and the monuments in Riverfront Park.  The Borough’s many restaurants and shops await in the center of town.

This event is free, but registration is requested by calling the Friends at 215-862-2021, or emailing friends@fodc.org.  For more information about this and other events, visit http://www.fodc.org
