Washington Crossing Historic Park will fully reopen for the spring season on Sunday, March 8 - Charter Day in Pennsylvania. Charter Day marks the date 334 years ago when England’s King Charles II signed the original Charter of Pennsylvania, which granted William Penn the land that is now Pennsylvania. In celebration of “Pennsylvania’s birthday,” the park will offer free tours and admission to Bowman’s Hill Tower and the Thompson-Neely House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. Other activities will include blacksmithing demonstrations, military drilling by Revolutionary War re-enactors and an 18th century chocolate-making demonstration in the Hibbs House. Real life married couple Carol Thompson and George Hartpence of New Hope lead the hysterical histrionics as Titania and Oberon, the Queen and King of the fairies in an enchanted forest. ActorsNET Cofounder and Artistic Director Cheryl Doyle of Morrisville directs the March production. A Midsummer Night’s Dream performs weekends March 6 - 22 at The Heritage Center Theatre, 635 N. Daniel Goldsmith, a Holocaust survivor, recounts having to say goodbye to his father as he was sent to a Nazi work camp, and how his mother placed him and his sister in the care of a convent when she became a courier for the Belgium Underground to help fight the Nazis. 3/8: A Benefit Concert and Auction to honor the life and music of John Bray
John passed away on January 15th, 2015 from ALS. A group of family and friends have put this event together and the funds raised will help to pay any remaining medical bills and help his wife Mary of 33 years. John Bray was known for his amazing musical talent and will be sorely missed. He was a beloved fixture in the New Hope area for over 30 years, and was a part of the wonderful family of local musicians. An admission fee of $10.00 will be taken at the door. 3/21: Stray Cat Strut 5K Run/1 Mile Family Walk, 8:00 AM
Cat Tales, Inc. is hosting Stray Cat Strut, an inaugural 5K Run/1 Mile Family Walk this spring 2015 at beautiful Tyler State Park in Newtown, PA. The 5K run will begin promptly at 9am and the 1K Family Walk at 9:30am. The Race will be held rain or shine. There will be plenty of post-race refreshments for all runners and walkers. You may register on race day but the fee for the 5K increases to $35 after March 1st. Race t-shirts while supplies last so register early to make sure you receive a shirt. Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners of the 5K and to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each age group. 3/21: Boating for Beginners, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Become a PA state-certified boat operator at the Newtown Township Administration Building. The certificate earned is accepted in all states (including New Jersey) where required for the operation of powered vessels including personal watercraft (jet skis, etc.). Class will provide an introduction to boating, equipment, safety, emergencies and general regulatory information. This is the minimum eight-hour requirement for state certificate. 3/21-22: La Fiocco presents “The King’s Theme: Bach’s Musical Offering and other Royal Treasures.”
This concert explores music for and by royalty during the Baroque era, and will include works composed by Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, for Louis XIV of France and George II of England, as well as J. S. Bach’s masterpiece, the trio sonata from the Musical Offering, based on a theme given to Bach by Frederick the Great of Prussia. It will also include works written by women composers Isabella Leonarda and Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre. The concert will be held on Saturday, March 21, at 8:00 PM at The Church of St. Monica, 635 First Avenue, Berwyn, PA and on Sunday, March 22, at 3:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 6587 Upper York Road, Solebury, PA. Non-contact football is a fun and exciting way to learn and play the game. This league will give players the experience to develop and improve their skills while having fun. Bucks County Taste and Triumph Brewing Company will present the 2nd Annual Bucks Bacon & Beer event on March 22 from 12 - 4 p.m. at the Triumph Brewing Company in New Hope. The event features local purveyors including butchers, charcuteriers, small farmers, artisanal bacon and sausage producers, local cheesemakers and artisanal food producers offering everything from small batch ice cream to chocolates to jams, all locally sourced in Bucks County and nearby. Triumph will offer a specially brewed Rauchbier “smoked” beer for the occasion. Admission includes two pints of Triumph beer, a commemorative glass and all the bacon you can eat. All are welcome to attend this traditional holiday activity celebrating the joy and fun of a good old- fashioned Easter Egg Hunt for both children and adults. The rain date is April 4. To participate, simply come with family and friends to Pickering Manor North Field, at the corner of Frost Street and Lincoln Avenue in Newtown Borough, at 9:00 am. This lively event is over in less than one half hour and will create memories for all. Don’t be late, as the hunt will start promptly at 9:00 am. 3/29: Free Lecture at Washington Crossing Historic Park, 2:00 PM
Amateur historian Jim Stinson will present a free lecture “From Hearth to Battlefield: A look at 18th century arms in the early years of the American Revolution” in the Washington Crossing Historic Park (PA) visitor center auditorium. During the lecture, Stinson will discuss the various types of firearms and weapons used by the fledgling Continental Army during the war. He will also bring several samples of the Pennsylvania long rifle and smoothbore fowler/musket used by militia troops and military muskets that were issued to regular troops.
